Physicians Formula Butter Highlighter in Rose Gold $10.99

Rose Gold is a medium copper with warm, reddish undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, but it was easy to blend out or apply less for sheerer coverage if preferred. The highlighter had a moist, spongy consistency when pressed and touched in the pan, but it applied more powder-like and was thinner without any true glossiness (but plenty of shine!) on my cheeks. It applied easily and blended out with little effort. The shine was strong but stopped just shy of emphasizing my skin’s natural texture. It wore well for almost 10 hours on me.

L'oreal Infallible 24-Hour Eyeshadow in Blinged & Brilliant $7.99

Blinged & Brilliant is a warm peach-beige with a bright, metallic finish. Milani Champagne Toast is a bit darker. MAC Summer Haze is fairly similar–perhaps a touch lighter. MAC Sweet Satisfaction is less metallic and softer. MAC Jest is very close in color, just less metallic.

I snagged this at my local CVS last week, and I’m in love! It’s incredibly soft, finely-milled, and smooth but the finish is high-frost, high-shine. It’s also absolutely dazzling and sparkling and all things magic during the holidays. If ever there was an occasion that merited finding the most sparkly finishes on the planet, it is the holidays. The pigmentation is excellent, whether you use it wet or dry, you’ll get full coverage. If you apply it damp, you’ll find the metallic finish is more prominent, while when used dry, it’s a combination of metallic and frost. I tested this shade, and it lasted for the twelve hours I wore it without fading or creasing (no base).

To make it less metallic, pat a matte eyeshadow on top (something beige and neutral works, or something of a similar color). Also worth noting: because of the extremely metallic, frosted finish, it can emphasize dryness on the eyes.

Maybelline ColorSensational Vivid Lipcolor in Neon Red $7.49

Neon Red is a bold, brightened red-orange with strong, warm undertones and a luminous sheen. Maybelline Orange Edge is lighter, more orange than red. Maybelline Infra-red is very similar. Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin is lighter, more orange.

The consistency is lightly creamy, slightly slick, and it applied easily without tugging or dragging along the lips. Despite the slickness, I didn’t have issues with the color feathering while I wore it for six hours. It was lightly hydrating and did leave a faint stain behind after it wore away.

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24-Hour Eyeshadow in Nude Compliment (90) $6.99

Nude Compliment (90) is a subtly, cool-toned taupe-brown with a metallic finish. It seemed like the top layer, where it reflects, is more cool-toned and grayer, while the base seemed warmer, more reddish. When sheered out, it seemed slightly warm. The color payoff was really good and easily worn at opaque or sheer color. It wore well for sixteen hours without fading or creasing. theBalm #19 (P, $6.50) is cooler-toned. Makeup Geek Moondust (P, $5.99) is darker.

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Gloss in Classic $7.99

Classic is a bright, medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones and a cream finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to the lips. The gloss was moderately tacky without feeling heavy or goopy, and while it felt more cream-like when I first applied it, a minute or so later it felt more gel-like. I was impressed by how the gloss did not sink into my lip lines and how it did not feather over time. It wore well for six hours and was lightly hydrating. (I have no idea what happened to the applicator; that was how it arrived and it was the only applicator that was wonky.)

Maybelline MasterChrome Metallic Highlighter In Nikkie Tutorials $9.99

Nikkie Tutorials is a bright, golden beige with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. It had rich, opaque pigmentation in a single layer, and the soft consistency of the powder made it easy to pick up quite a bit of product. I’d recommend using a lighter hand initially to build up coverage and get a feel for the intensity. The texture of the powder was incredibly finely-milled, almost cream-like but soft and lightly powdery when used with a brush. It applied evenly to my skin, blended out with little effort, and stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit. I didn’t notice it emphasizing my skin’s natural texture.

NYX Matte Lipstick in Alabama $5.99

Alabama is a rich, medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It was richly pigmented with a creamy, smooth consistency that glided on without tugging on the lips and delivered even coverage. The color wore well for over six hours and left a slight stain behind, though the formula was neither drying nor hydrating over time.

The Matte Lipstick is supposed to be “highly pigmented” and have a “velvety, non-glossy” finish. In general, the formula has semi-opaque to opaque color coverage with a velvety texture that glides on without tugging but doesn’t have a lot of slip, so the lipstick won’t slide around while worn. The formula varied from non-drying to moderately drying with wear times that ranged from four to over six hours (deeper, reddish shades lasted quite long). It has a mint scent and no discernible taste. I noticed that the packaging had a tendency to twist up the lipstick too easily (even barely holding it) and sometimes would twist down as I would apply it directly from the tube.

NYX Prismatic Shadow in Liquid Gold $6.00

Liquid Gold is described as a “deep copper gold.” It’s a rich, brightened copper with warm, orange undertones and a lighter, golden metallic sheen. The eyeshadow was intensely pigmented with a really smooth, blendable texture that wasn’t powdery at all. It wore for eight and a half hours on me. MAC Espresso Blend #1 (LE, ) is less shimmery. MAC A Glimmer of Gold #3 (P, $21.00) is lighter. LORAC Nude #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter.

Wet ‘n’ Wild MegaGlo Liquid Highlighter in Goddess Glow $5.99

Goddess Glow is a medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a fine, pearly sheen. It had medium coverage, which was buildable to nearly opaque coverage with two to three layers (though you’ll want to wait for each layer to dry). I found it photographed and appeared lighter (most of the time) with how well it reflected light back.

The texture was thin without being too watery, and it spread nicely across the skin for even coverage that worked well on bare skin as well as over foundation as it did not lift up my foundation. It dried down fully but always looked quite dewy, and I could really catch my highlight whenever I passed by a mirror. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer in Endless Summer $14.99

Endless Summer is a medium-dark brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a satin sheen. It had rich color coverage in one pass, though the texture was denser, lightly creamy, and smooth to the touch, which made it easier to use a lighter hand for more gradual coverage if preferred. The bronzer applied evenly to my skin and blended out with little effort. There was a natural sheen to the finish–not overtly shimmery but more than semi-matte–and the red undertone became more apparent as I buffed the product outward. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Milani Eyeshadow in Olympian Blue $5.99

Olympian Blue is a rich medium blue with a matte finish. MAC Blue Candy is lighter. MAC Electric Eel is comparable. MAC Freshwater is a smidgen darker and frosted. This is one shade that has a lot of dupes–this, of course, is the most affordable!

Olympian Blue is highly pigmented, just as described, with an ultra-finely milled, silky soft texture that’s easy to blend. I love that it’s not so soft that it’s powdery, and it doesn’t disappear once applied. You don’t have to pack this color on at all–it’s very intense and stays that way, even as you blend around the edges. When I tried it out, it wore for a full eight hours without primer and there was no apparent fading or creasing.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Addis Ababa $5.99

Addis Ababa is a vibrant, neon pink with cool, blue undertones and a satin-matte finish. Urban Decay Anarchy (P, $22.00) is darker, glossier. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia (LE, $7.49) is darker. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash (P, $7.49) is slightly darker. It’s richly pigmented with full color coverage in nearly one swipe. It applies evenly, and it dries down to a satin-matte finish in about thirty seconds. After two to three hours of wear, it is fully matte. The texture is thin, and it almost feels dry when applied, but it’s not drying while worn at all. It’s actually slightly hydrating overall. Addis Ababa wears really well and lasts a long time–a solid six and a half hours plus a stain that lingers for a few more hours. It’s not a particularly original color, but it is a fantastic version of it–and for under $10.

Milani 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Soft & Sultry $20.00

Soft and Sultry contains a mix of neutrals, taupes, and deep gray/black hues. It has “smoky eye” written all over it. For someone who regularly uses eyeshadow primer and prefers to build up some of their mid-tone shades, I think it would work just fine, but my experience was that several of the matte shades were a little too powdery to remain pigmented in practice, had some fallout, and overall, the formula used in the palette was shorter-wearing than average. Used over primer, they lasted longer (12 hours), but they did show fading/creasing sooner than better formulas, even over primer.
